Leonardo da Vinci: What We Can Learn About Problem-Solving from this Iconic Figure
Every day, we encounter problems that require solutions. To succeed in school, career, and life, we must develop critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills. Here at Morphoses, Soft Skills are our passion as we recognize how important they are in our lives. Thus, we have created a Gamified Learning Experience to promote problem-solving skills in children aged 6 to 17, and guess what? Learners are performing amazingly.
Have you ever wondered what makes someone a good problem solver?
This blog post will discuss how parents can identify problem-solving skills in their children, connect them to the iconic figure of Leonardo da Vinci, and show how activity-based learning can promote the development of this essential soft skill.
What are problem-solving skills?
Problem-solving is the ability to identify and define problems, evaluate options, and choose a solution (Herrity, 2023). Children with strong problem-solving skills can confidently approach challenges, think critically, and develop creative solutions. Hence, they are not afraid to take risks and learn from their mistakes.
Connecting Problem-Solving to Leonardo da Vinci
When we think of problem-solving and creativity, one name that comes to mind is Leonardo da Vinci. He was a master of both skills, and his ability to devise creative solutions to complex problems was legendary. For instance, he designed flying machines and created intricate paintings like the Mona Lisa. Additionally, he was known for his meticulous note-taking and his curiosity about the world around him.
How can parents identify problem-solving skills in their children?
Problem-solving skills can be observed in everyday life (Folkman, 2021). Children who have strong problem-solving skills:
- Are curious and ask questions
- Break down problems into smaller parts
- Think critically and consider multiple perspectives
- Develop creative solutions to challenges
- Take calculated risks
- Learn from their mistakes
How can activity-based learning promote the development of problem-solving skills?
At Morphoses, we believe that activity-based learning is the key to promoting the development of problem-solving skills. Our gamified learning experience is designed to help children learn problem-solving skills through play. Children can develop their critical thinking, creativity, and decision-making abilities by engaging in activities such as puzzles, quests, and games. Our approach to learning is designed to be fun and engaging, allowing children to learn while having fun. For instance, our activity titled Solve the problem, save the trip presents the following scenario: During a holiday journey, the team encounters obstacles, including a forced landing on a remote island. To survive, they must use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to select and combine seemingly irrelevant items from a pool of resources to bring to the island. They must work together to overcome challenges using their chosen items and the island’s resources.
The Importance of Developing Problem-Solving Skills
Research has shown that strong problem-solving skills are crucial for success in both school and life. Children who develop these skills are more likely to achieve academic success, possess better social skills, and have greater self-confidence (Suratno et al., 2020). These abilities are also highly sought after in the workforce, as employers seek individuals who can think critically and come up with innovative solutions. Soft skills create independent individuals who can take initiative and face every challenge that comes their way.
